20/02/2017 - HPA AQMP Midterm review Draft Report for public comment
The Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) conducted the medium term review for the Highveld Priority Area (HPA) Air Quality Management Plan (AQMP). The purpose of the medium term review was to establish the current status of air quality in the HPA and to inform objectives that ensure improvement in air quality in the area. Areas are declared as Priority Areas because the Minister or MEC reasonably believes that:
  • ambient air quality standards are being, or may be, exceeded in the area, or any other situation exists which is causing, or may cause, a significant negative impact on air quality in the area; and
  • the area requires specific air quality management action to rectify the situation.
A structured approach is detailed in the NEM:AQA which provides information on how priority areas are declared, managed and the eventual withdrawal of the declaration
